After Listening to Act One: Finding the Self in Selfie of This American Life’s episode, I am not surprised as to what these young girls are saying. I don’t use Instagram to this extreme but I get what they say about how many likes they get or sharing different photos with their friends and talking about what other people post. These are things that anyone with an Instagram does. The podcast just really describes the ways young girls communicate with each other over social media. The way it's like a road map for them in their social setting. Instagram is all about pictures it's what someone puts out about themselves that they want other people to see and react to.
The girls talked about the comments on their photos which is something I understand but don’t really play a part in. They explained how a majority of the comments are the same, examples would be “pretty” “so cute” “beautiful” along with different emojis attached to them. They also explained that depending on who commented on a photo and what they said can show you whether those two people are close or not. This is such a true explanation as to how instagram works because you can learn so much about a single person just by who likes their pictures and who comments.
These girls use social media as a road map to their school and entire social setting. They can tell whose friends are whose, which people are best friends, and it allows them to possibly make new friends just by commenting on someone's photo. It's a way to spark interest it different groups and lets them follow others lives without actually knowing the person.
This shows they way young teens, especially girls, in today's media culture react and interact with each other. It shows the way they want to be viewed and the way they view one another.
